Summary
Metformin alone is not an effective treatment for infertility associated with anovulatory polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Though there is an increased ovulation rate with metformin alone compared with placebo in PCOS, metformin alone should not be the first line treatment because other ovulation induction agents such as clomiphene citrate (CC) are more effective at increasing ovulation, pregnancy and live birth rates.
